Season by season

Winter December, January, February

Outdoor insects are dormant, so the calls are about what is already inside: mice and rats in walls and basements, cockroaches and bed bugs (which do not care about the weather), and the occasional cluster fly or lady beetle waking up on a warm sunny afternoon.

Spring March, April, May

Carpenter ants and pavement ants become active as the ground thaws. Eastern subterranean termites swarm in southern Michigan, usually on a warm day after rain. Overwintering stink bugs, lady beetles and cluster flies try to get back outside, often through your living space. Wasp queens start new nests.

Summer June, July, August

Mosquitoes and ticks peak, and so does time outdoors. Ant colonies are at full size. Wasp and hornet nests grow all summer and are at their largest and most defensive by August. Wildlife raise young in attics and under decks.

Fall September, October, November

The busiest stretch of the year for home invaders. Mice move indoors as nights cool. Asian lady beetles, stink bugs and cluster flies pile onto sunny walls looking for gaps. Yellowjackets get aggressive around food late in the season. Sealing up in September prevents much of it.
