Pest control in Flint
Genesee County, Mid-Michigan
Flint's neighborhoods were built around the auto plants, from 19th century houses in Carriage Town to the GM-built homes of Civic Park and post-war houses on the city's edges. Today many blocks have vacant houses and empty lots beside occupied homes, which gives rats, mice and raccoons plenty of shelter. The Flint River runs right through downtown.

Vacant lots and the homes next door
Flint has lost a large share of its population since the auto plants scaled back, and thousands of houses have been demolished or left empty. An empty house next to an occupied one is a pest problem waiting to happen. Rats burrow under collapsed garages and debris, raccoons and skunks den in open crawlspaces, and mice move back and forth through the gaps. When a vacant house is torn down, the animals living in it often move to the nearest home.
You cannot control the lot next door, but you can make your property less inviting. Keep grass short along the shared side, store trash in carts with tight lids, close crawlspace openings with heavy screening and seal gaps around the foundation and garage. A local exterminator can set tamper-resistant bait stations along the property line and check for burrows.
Older homes in Civic Park, Mott Park and beyond
Civic Park was built in the late 1910s and 1920s by a General Motors housing company, and many houses around Mott Park and the College Cultural area date from the 1920s through the 1940s. They have wood siding, old wood windows, porches and stone or block foundations, all of which open up over time. Mice are the steady fall call, and carpenter ants show up where porch framing and window sills have stayed wet.
The Flint River runs through downtown past the University of Michigan Flint campus and Kettering University, and the riverfront parks and wooded stretches bring mosquitoes and wildlife to nearby blocks. Homes near the river, Kearsley Park and the city's other large green spaces see more raccoons and summer mosquitoes than those in the middle of a built-up block.
Pest control in Flint: common questions
What can I do about rats coming from a vacant house?
Secure your own trash and pet food, clear wood piles and clutter along the property line, and seal gaps at the garage and foundation. A pest company can place locked bait stations and find burrows. You can also report the property to the city or the Genesee County Land Bank if it is open or full of debris.
Are raccoons in a crawlspace dangerous?
They can carry roundworm and other diseases in their droppings, and they tear up ductwork and insulation. Mothers with young can be aggressive. Have a wildlife professional remove them and seal the entry, and avoid cleaning droppings yourself without proper protection.
How much does pest control cost in Flint?
Prices depend on the pest, the size of the home and how many visits are needed. Rodent work that includes exclusion costs more up front but tends to last longer than bait alone. Our cost guide explains typical Michigan pricing, and the quotes you get through this site are free to compare.
