Bed bugs in Michigan

Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that hide in mattress seams and bed frames and bite at night. They show up in Michigan homes, apartments, dorms and hotels in every season. They do not go away on their own, and store-bought foggers make them worse. Professional heat or chemical treatment typically costs $500 to $2,500 for a home.

How bed bugs get into Michigan homes

Bed bugs travel. They ride home in luggage, backpacks, used furniture and secondhand mattresses. In Michigan, the common sources are hotel stays, college dorms in places like Ann Arbor, East Lansing and Kalamazoo, apartments with shared walls, and furniture picked up from the curb or bought online. Summer travel season often leads to more calls in late summer and early fall.

Cleanliness has nothing to do with it. A spotless house can get bed bugs from one suitcase. What matters is catching them early, before they spread from the bed to couches, other bedrooms or the unit next door. A small infestation in one mattress is far easier and cheaper to treat than bugs spread through a whole house.

Michigan's health department has published bed bug guidance for residents, landlords, schools and shelters. Your local health department is a good first call if you rent and want to know how your building should handle a report, or if you work in a setting like a school or care facility where bed bugs have been found.

Bed bug treatment that works

Professional heat treatment raises the whole room or unit to a temperature that kills bed bugs and their eggs, usually in a single day. It works well but costs more and requires careful prep. Chemical treatment uses several products applied to cracks, seams and furniture over two or three visits, about two weeks apart, so newly hatched bugs get hit before they can breed.

Many companies combine the two: heat for the main rooms, plus residual products and mattress encasements to catch survivors. Follow-up inspections matter. A treatment is not finished until a follow-up visit, or monitors placed under the bed legs, show no new activity for several weeks. Ask how many follow-up visits are included in the price.

Do not use bug bombs or total release foggers for bed bugs. They do not reach bugs hiding in seams and cracks, they can scatter bugs into other rooms and neighboring units, and they create a fire and health hazard when misused. Rubbing alcohol sprayed on furniture is also a fire risk and should be avoided.

Bed bugs in Michigan apartments and rentals

In multi-unit buildings, bed bugs move through wall voids, outlets and shared laundry areas. Treating one unit while the neighbors stay infested often fails. Tell your landlord or property manager in writing as soon as you find signs, so adjoining units above, below and beside yours can be inspected at the same time.

Before treatment, the company will give you a prep list. Usually that means bagging and drying clothes and bedding on high heat, decluttering around beds, and not moving items to other rooms or a friend's place. Skipping prep is one of the most common reasons treatments need to be repeated, so follow the list closely.

What you can do yourself

  1. 1Inspect mattress seams, box spring corners and the bed frame with a flashlight and a credit card edge.
  2. 2Run bedding and clothing through a hot dryer for at least 30 minutes.
  3. 3Put bed bug proof encasements on the mattress and box spring.
  4. 4Pull the bed a few inches from the wall and keep bedding off the floor.
  5. 5Check hotel beds and keep luggage on a rack, not on the bed or carpet.
  6. 6Inspect any used furniture closely before bringing it inside.

Bed bugs: common questions

Can I get rid of bed bugs myself?

Small, early cases sometimes respond to careful vacuuming, hot drying and encasements, but most established infestations need professional treatment. Bed bugs hide in tiny cracks and many over-the-counter sprays do not work well against them. Foggers do not work and can spread the problem.

Do bed bugs spread disease?

Bed bugs are not known to spread disease to people, according to the CDC. The real problems are itchy bites, possible skin infections from scratching, and the stress and sleep loss that come with an infestation.

How long can bed bugs live without feeding?

Adults can survive for months without a meal, especially in cooler conditions. That is why leaving a room or cottage empty is not a reliable way to get rid of them. Treatment and follow-up inspections are the dependable approach.

Are bed bug bites the same as other insect bites?

Bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs. Mosquito, flea and spider bites can look similar, and some people do not react at all. Look for physical signs like live bugs, shed skins or fecal spots before deciding on treatment. Our spider guide covers what spider bites usually look like.

Who pays for bed bug treatment in a Michigan rental?

That depends on your lease and local rules. Report the problem to your landlord in writing right away and ask how the building handles it. Your local health department or housing office can explain what applies in your city.

How do I find a bed bug company near me?

Look for a company with MDARD-certified applicators that offers a written treatment plan and follow-up inspections. A licensed local company can inspect and confirm whether you have bed bugs before you pay for treatment. You can request a free quote.
